The Craigie House study, in one era used by George Washington, hosted the Dante Club each Wednesday evening in the 1860s. Longfellow lived in the house most of his adult life, and passed it on to his family. Longfellow appreciated its history, writing: “This was Washington’s own private room; and where my writing-desk now stands, there stood his table… In fact, I think the arrangement of the room is exactly the same as when in his time.” The Longfellow House is now a National Park Historic Site in Cambridge, open to the public for tours and events.
